Currently, the Region has three administrative districts, 21 divisions, 79 wards and 372 villages. The region has 7 electoral constituencies.

The Region is located in the remote South Western extreme of Tanzania between lakes Tanganyika and Rukwa. it occupies an area of 75,240 sq km. between 5 and 9 degrees south.
